RFP: Lake Tahoe Paper Bike Map

The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition (LTBC) is seeking consultant services to update and redesign the well-known Lake Tahoe paper bikeways map. The existing bike map can be found online in PDF format (http://www.tahoebike.org/where-to-ride/bike-map/). All interested consultants should email questions and proposals to tahoebikemap@gmail.com.  The deadline for submittal is March 31, 2017. The LTBC hopes to contract and begin work no later than April 10, 2017.

Background:
The LTBC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting safe and enjoyable bicycle transportation and recreation in the Tahoe region. The LTBC hosts fun and educational events, advocates for improved infrastructure, connects riders and bike-friendly business, and provides resources such as the bike map to highlight bicycling as an immediate and practical way to build healthy and sustainable communities.

Project Description:
The LTBC creates and maintains Tahoe’s most comprehensive paper and online bike maps. The maps indicate where shared-use paths, bicycle lanes, and bicycle routes exist. LTBC is looking for consultant services to redesign the existing paper, static map to:

  • Enhance display and distribution through size and fold
  • Illustrate more clearly and cleanly Tahoe’s bicycle-friendly infrastructure
  • Interface fluidly with the newly launched online map (http://map.tahoebike.org/).

We would like a map that, when folded, fits easily into a pocket – we have seen one example that is approximately 6.75″ x 3.75″ folded up (and thin, about 1/16″). Unfolded, it is about 26″ x 20″. It folds 3 times lengthwise and 7 times endwise. The map should include a full Lake Tahoe Region overview as an inset, and may split the Region between North and South on opposite sides of the map. No dedicated mountain bike trails are to be shown. Points of interest should be demarcated, perhaps using an alphanumerical system or icons. Ideally, the paper map would indicate the steepness and direction of the grade of bike routes, as well as the bike route classification.

LTBC will retain the rights to the final map and files upon completion.

Proposed Scope of Work:

  1. Kick off meeting: April 2017
Meet with LTBC project lead to discuss existing map, requested map updates, and required data to be provided by LTBC.
  1. Draft Map: April-May 2017
Submit draft map(s) to LTBC project lead for review.
  1. Final Map: June 2017
Submit final map with all edits incorporated. Final should be delivered to LTBC project lead in print-ready format / files.

Project Timeline:

  • Contract and begin work no later than April 10, 2017.
  • Draft map delivered by May 15, 2017.
  • Final product delivered no later than June 1, 2017, though negotiable during contracting.
